The Democratic Agenda: Taking Guns And Defunding The Police

Last month, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the NYPD’s budget would be cut by more than one point five billion dollars. However, that wasn’t good enough for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“Defunding police means defunding police,” she was quoted by the New York Post as saying. “It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education’s budget so the exact same police remain in schools.”

“This is not a victory,” she went on, adding, “The fight to defund policing continues.”

Ocasio-Cortez isn’t unique, as a growing number of Democrats are talking about defunding or even disbanding law enforcement agencies altogether.

Naturally, this has been accompanied by a surge in violent crime, and innocent people are paying the price: on July 12, a one-year-old boy was shot to death in a New York City park. Not that the problem is confined to the Big Apple, as brutal assaults are taking place across the country.

This seems to make no difference, though, as Democrats continue pushing ahead with demands to demolish the police. However, it looks like they’re planning to keep at least a few cops around.

After all, someone has to collect your guns.

That’s evident from a new anti-gun proposal by former Vice President Joe Biden. His plan includes banning the sale of “assault weapons and high-capacity magazines” while forcing existing owners to either surrender their weapons or register them with the federal government.

He also promises to “reduce the stockpiling of firearms” by restricting the number of guns that an individual can purchase, and says he will require people to leave weapons “safely in their homes.”

Biden has said he will task Beto O’Rourke with taking “care of the gun problem,” adding that the former Texas congressman will “be the one who leads this effort.” O’Rourke is famous for declaring, “Hell yes we are going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.”

What Biden hopes to achieve with these proposals isn’t entirely clear, as those who carry guns legally rarely engage in violent crimes: according to data released by the state of Texas, only one of the over 1.3 million people who were licensed to carry a handgun there in 2018 was convicted of murder, while another three were convicted of manslaughter. That makes for a homicide rate of 0.29 per one hundred thousand residents–far below the national average.

What’s more, of the 14,123 homicides that were committed in the United States that year, only 297 involved rifles of any kind, with AR-15s comprising just a fraction of the total. Judging from the evidence, it’s obvious that law abiding people aren’t going to benefit from gun confiscation. Who will?

Criminals.

Across the country, thousands of people of use their weapons to defend themselves and others. Women have the most to gain from a gun since unlike other weapons, its efficacy depends on the user’s skill–not her size and strength. That’s why an armed Minnesota woman was able to fend off a gang of men. It’s the same reason a 91 year-old man in Michigan could defend himself in a drugstore parking lot.

The AR-15 is particularly useful for them: its light weight and manageable recoil combined with the ability to accept standard capacity box magazines can allow a single person to take on multiple attackers.

A Florida woman demonstrated that last year when she took on a gang of armed home invaders. It’s also what allowed a Houston man to stop a drive-by shooting in his neighborhood.

Not that a gun always has to be used for it to be effective: in a survey of convicts funded by the Department of Justice, 81 percent agreed that “a smart criminal always tries to find out if his potential victim is armed.” Seventy four percent concurred that “one reason burglars avoid houses when people are home is they fear being shot.” In other words, removing guns from the equation would leave predators with far less to worry about.

Unfortunately, that’s the scenario that Americans will face if Democrats win in November. Because while they won’t protect you, they will top you from protecting yourself.
