Mike Bloomberg: “You Just Do Not Want The Average Citizen Carrying A Gun”

In December, firearms instructor Jack Wilson made headlines when he stopped a mass shooting at his Texas church. Wilson can be seen in video footage shooting the gunman, and it shows other parishioners drawing their weapons as well.

While most people were glad that someone was able to stop the threat, billionaire Democrat Mike Bloomberg seemed less approving.

When asked about the shooting, Bloomberg replied, “I wasn’t there. I don’t know the facts — that somebody in the congregation had their own gun and killed the person who murdered two other people.”

“But,” he continued, “it’s the job of law enforcement to have guns and to decide when to shoot. You just do not want the average citizen carrying a gun in a crowded place.”

It’s not clear what Bloomberg meant by letting “law enforcement decide when to shoot,” as there were no police officers in the church. That wasn’t unusual, as cops can’t always be around. The good news? A gun can.

Across the country, legally armed citizens regularly use guns to defend themselves and others. While the majority of those who carry are male, women actually have the most to gain from being armed. Unlike other weapons, the efficacy of a firearm depends on its user’s skill–not her size and strength. That’s why an armed Minnesota woman was able to fend off a gang of men who were attacking her husband.

And far from depending on the police for protection, some gun owners have come to their aid. Marine Corps veteran Scott Perkins did, drawing his gun when he saw Deputy Dylan Dorris being overpowered by a suspect. Dorris later said that he’s “alive today” because of Perkins’ actions.

The incident wasn’t unique: in Florida, gun permit holder Ashad Russell also used his weapon to save an officer, with the events being captured on video.

Yet while legally armed citizens may be a threat to criminals, they’re rarely a danger to the public. For example, of the more than 1.3 million Texans who were licensed to carry a gun in 2018, only one was convicted of murder and another three were convicted of manslaughter. If they formed their own country, its murder rate would be 0.29 per one hundred thousand residents–far below the national average.

The fact is, a gun in the right hands can mean the difference between life and death. Bloomberg understands that, which is why he’s protected by armed bodyguards. He just doesn’t want you protecting yourself.
