At The Western Conservative Summit, Abby Johnson Pulled No Punches

The ninth annual Western Conservative Summit was held last week, and in a surprise move, organizers invited a Democrat to address the gathering. Colorado’s Gov. Jared Polis spoke of his Jewish faith and also referenced the New Testament, pointing to Jesus’ admonitions about caring for the weak and vulnerable.

Given that this year's theme was religious freedom, he may have thought that his talking points wouldn't be controversial. If so, he thought wrong. Former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life advocate Abby Johnson was also scheduled to speak that day, and she listened to the governor's comments.

She wasn't impressed.

And then to hide behind his "religion." To say that when Jesus talked about providing for the vulnerable in our society, when you were naked you clothed me, when I was hungry you fed me. Please. Please. We have innocent human beings whose lives are being threatened every single day. And I don't don't know what kind of religion he's practicing, but my God says that those human beings that He created have a God-given right to life.

Those remarks came after Johnson pointed out how Colorado places no gestational limits on when an abortion can take place. Dr. Anthony Levatino has performed over twelve hundred abortions (you can verify his medical license here), and in the video below, he explains what a second trimester abortion involves:

After the amniotic fluid is removed, the abortionist uses a sopher clamp — a grasping instrument with rows of sharp “teeth” — to grasp and pull the baby’s arms and legs, tearing the limbs from the child’s body. The abortionist continues to grasp intestines, spine, heart, lungs, and any other limbs or body parts. The most difficult part of the procedure is usually finding, grasping and crushing the baby’s head. After removing pieces of the child’s skull, the abortionist uses a curette to scrape the uterus and remove the placenta and any remaining parts of the baby.

As you read the words "grasp" and "tearing," keep in mind there's evidence a preborn child can feel pain by twenty weeks.

Apologists often claim that late-term abortions are only done out of medical necessity. Well, they're not. At Southwestern Women's Options, they'll perform elective abortions through thirty two weeks.

Granted, Gov. Polis is hardly the only person to profess religious faith and not have a problem with abortion. Rev. Amanda Henderson is the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado’s executive director, and when she was shown ultrasound images of a state representative’s 28 week-old daughter, Henderson described the child as a “potential life.” How a potential life can have a beating heart or suck her thumb wasn't explained.

As Abby Johnson noted, there are many ways to provide for the vulnerable. We can contribute to pregnancy care centers--places where new moms can get material and emotional support. We can also publicize the fact that couples seeking to adopt outnumber available infants, and they aren't hard to find. But allowing children to be killed in a way that we wouldn't even execute a convicted murderer?

Please.
