During the 2016 campaign, former Klansman David Duke made headlines when he endorsed Donald Trump for president. While at first expressing confusion on who Duke was, Trump went on to publicly reject Duke’s endorsement, declaring, “I disavow.”
Of course, Trump isn’t the only one to have by a known bigot reach out to him. A number of Democrats and liberal activists have been approached by someone who calls Jews “Satanic” and “my enemy” while praising Hitler as “a very great man.” Their response?
They embraced him.

Maxine Waters, did anyway: the California congresswoman was seen putting her arms around Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. In 2005, then Sen. Barack Obama posed for a picture with him (the photographer agreed not release it). Cory Booker said at a campaign event this year that he was “very familiar” with Farrakhan and would be willing to meet with him.
Women’s March co-president Tamika D. Mallory has defended her decision to attend an event hosted by Farrakhan, saying that she has done so for years. Fellow organizer Linda Sarsour has ties to him as well; she’s also endorsed violence against women who criticize Islam.
Farrakhan isn’t the only racist that the left doesn’t have a problem with. In 1991, anti-Semitic rioters murdered a Jewish man and left others beaten; the Rev. Al Sharpton was unsympathetic, announcing, “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.” Four years later, Sharpton organized protests against the Jewish-owned Freddy’s Fashion Mart, describing its proprietors as “white interlopers.” The demonstrations stopped when a protester shot the store up and then set it on fire–killing 7 people in the process. None of this stopped Sharpton from being welcomed into the Obama White House.

In his response to last year's State of the Union address, Rep. Joe Kennedy III mentioned how Democrats “steadfastly say, black lives matter.” While black lives do indeed matter, there’s good evidence that the Black Lives Matter movement contributes to getting them killed. It also includes people like Yusra Khogali; Khogali has described whites as “defects” and “subhuman.”
And speaking of David Duke, he recently praised House Democrat Ilhan Omar after she made a series of anti-Semitic remarks. Not that Omar is unique: fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib once wrote for a publication owned by the Nation of Islam. She also subscribed to an Instagram account that compared Jews to rats and blamed them for 9/11. Both congresswomen have been defended by Linda Sarsour, who says that conservatives are attempting to “marginalize” them.

Rep. Tlaib likes to accuse Republicans of being racists, but the truth is, she and others don't like her don't need to look across the aisle to find bigotry. They need to look in the mirror.
